DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS: AN OVERVIEW
DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS
The Department of Physics, Nirmala College, Muvattupuzha (NCM) started functioning in 1953 and came into full swing in1957 with the introduction of B.Sc degree course. Now the department has two degree courses namely BSc Physics (Model 1) and BSc Physics (Model II- Vocational - Applied Electronics). The department offers subsidiary physics classes for BSc Mathematics and BSc Chemistry students. Besides, the department conducts a UGC sponsored carrier oriented ADD-ON certificate course in Information Technology. There are 11 faculty members including three Ph.D holders and and four M.Phil holders, and 3 laboratory staff in the department at present. The sanctioned student's strength of B. Sc Physics model I is 36, model II is 24 and that of add on course is 25. The department offers two open courses to the 3rd year degree students (i) Amateur astronomy, and (ii) Energy and environment.
The department is located centrally in the first floor of the main block, which include 6 lecture halls, two laboratories for B.Sc Model I and Model II courses, a nanoscience research laboratory and faculty room. The department has facilities like computers, internet, LCD projector, printers and scanner cum Photostat, book bank with more than 500 books, telephone and intercom. The department also has many teaching aids such as models and charts.
The department has a collaborative Nanoscience research project entitled “Synthesis, Characterisation and Applications of Nanocrystalline Metal Oxides” with the Department of studies in Physics, Mangalore University, Mangalagangotri, Karnataka. This major project is funded by Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE), Thiruvananthapuram. Investigators are Dr. Thomas Varghese, Principal Investigator (PI), and Prof. Sunny Joseph and Jassentha O.P., Co-Investigators (CI). Besides, there is an ongoing minor research project titled “Synthesis and Applications of Nanometal Oxides, funded by University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi.
