Activities of the Students


PHYSICS ASSOCIATION

The physics association of Nirmala College was first organized in the year 1969. The objectives of the association are to develop a scientific aptitude in the members of the association, to promote close understanding of the subject through discussions, to provide opportunities to get in touch with the latest developments in physics, by arranging seminars and to conduct field trips/lab visits, film shows etc. to improve knowledge. Head of the department is the president of the association in addition there is a staff adviser and an elected student representative (secretary) from the physics students. The physics association had conducted science fairs, published hand written journals, organized welcome (to newcomers) and sent off (to outgoing) gatherings, science quiz etc. During the welcome ceremony the staff and newcomer students introduce each other. And during the sent off gathering prizes and mementos are distributed and students share their experiences and sorrow.

Study Tours

Study tours are conducted every year for degree students. The students were accompanied by their Class tutors and selected teachers. The tour programmes includes visit of Industrial firms, University centers, Observatories and so on.

 Festivals

Every year festivals such as Onam, Christmas etc. are celebrated class wise in the dept: under the supervision of the class tutors of the respective classes. The functions are celebrated in a cordial atmosphere with a variety of cultural programme.

 Alumni

Regular alumni meetings are conducted every year. Each outgoing batches are exhorted to attend reunion meetings after 5 years.

  ACTIVITIES 2010-2011

1. Physics Association Inauguration and Seminar

Prof. K Babu Joseph, Former Vice Chancellor of Cochin University of Science and Technology, Cochin inaugurated the physics association activities on 11th  August 2010 at 2.00 pm in the Audio Visual Hall. The meeting was presided over by Prof. E.V. Krishnan Namboothiri. Staff coordinator Dr. Thomas Varghese welcomed the gathering. Prof. N. Joy, Principal felicitated and association secretary delivered vote of thanks. After the inaugural ceremony, the chief guest conducted a seminar on ‘Crisis in Cosmology’.

 2. Social Welfare Programme – H1N1 Awareness Prgramme

Physics Department actively participated in the awareness programme organized by the college on 22.06.2010. Each student of the department visited 10 neighbouring houses to spread the awareness of the epidemic H1N1. Dr. S. Sankararaman was the coordinator.

 3. Seminar on Science & Society- Mobile Phone Hazards

The Department organized a seminar on science and society on 27th September 2010. Emeritus Prof. VPN Nampoothiri was the resource person. The function was chaired by Prof. N Joy, Principal, Nirmala College. Dr. S. Sankararaman delivered the welcome speech and Mr. Aloysius Sabu extended vote of thanks.

 4. Workshop on Physics Teaching Learning Process

 In association with Indian Association of Physics Teachers the department has organized a one day workshop for Physics teachers of colleges and higher secondary on Physics Teaching Learning Process on 27th  September 2010.  The workshop was inaugurated by Prof. N. Joy, Principal of the college and Prof. E.V. Krishnan Nampoothiri chaired the function in which Dr. S. Sankararaman delivered the welcome speech and Mr. Aloysius Sabu extended vote of thanks.

5. Inauguration of Open Forum in Physics & Seminar on Science Fiction

To motivate and inspire students towards physics, an Open Forum in Physics was formed and its formal inauguration was held on 30 September 2010 in the Audio Visual Hall. The inaugural speech by Mr. V.K. Adarsh, Regional Technical Manager, Indian Bank, Ernakulam was very much inspiring and fruitful. The seminar by Mr. V.K Adarsh on ‘Science Fiction’ was followed. Science fiction deals with the impact of imagined innovations in science or technology often in a futuristic setting. BLOG: www.openforumncphysics.blogspot.com.

6.Social Awareness Programme

The Department organized an environmental awareness programme on Environmental Conservation and Plastic Threat under the supervision of Dr. Jaseentha O.P. Final year B.Sc students visited 6 schools in Muvattupuzha on 06.10.2010  and spread awareness in young minds.

7.Faculty Training Programme

The department, along with the Kerala State Higher Education Council (KSHEC) Trivandrum organized a Faculty Training programme on information technology for college teachers from 7th to 9th December 2010. The programme was inaugurated by Prof. N Joy, Principal, Nirmala College on 7th December 2010 at 10.00 a.m. The programme Co-ordinator Dr. Thomas Varghese, welcomed the gathering, Fr. Vincent Nedungattu, Vice Principal, Nirmala College delivered felicitations and Prof. E.V. Krishnan Namboothiri, delivered vote of thanks. Thirty one teachers from various departments of our college and other colleges attended the programme. Ms. Jeya Jimmy, Director, Online Computer training Centre, Koothattukulam; Prof. Saji Joseph, Department of Mathematics; Prof. Sherin Mathew G., Department of Computer Science; Prof. Jobin Varghese P, Department of Computer Science; Prof. Raison J Mathews, Department of Computer Science and Dr. T.M. Jacob, Department of Statistics were the resource persons for the programme. The valedictory function of the Faculty training programme was inaugurated by the chief guest Prof. K.N Ramachandran Nair, HOD, Department of Computer Science, Vishwajyothi College of Engineering, Vazhakulam.

8.SCILLEX -2011

The Department actively participated in the arts and science exhibition “SCILORE -2011” organized by the college from 21 – 23 December 2010. As part of the exhibition, a photo exhibition of various space phenomena and space expedition was also conducted along with departmental exhibits.  

9. INSPIRE Programme

The association actively participated in the INSPIRE programme organized by the college from 11th to 15th January, 2010. The programme was the part of the scheme implemented by Dept. of Science & Technology, Govt. of India for attracting young talents to study science. The programme was inaugurated by Dr. PK Iyengar, Former Chairman, AEC. Dr. VN Rajasekharan Pillai, Vice Chancellor. IGNOU delivered the valedictory address. 150 higher secondary students from various parts of Kerala attended the programme. Eminent scientists and professors like Dr. Babu Joseph, Dr. V.P.N. Nampoori, Dr. Balakrishna, Dr. Krishnagopal, Dr.E. Kunhikrishnan, Prof. S. Sivadas, Prof. C.G. Ramachandran Nair, Prof. C.S. Paulose, Dr.Shaju Thomas, Dr. S. Sankararaman, Dr. James, Dr. T.R. Ananthakrishnan, Bhatnagar Awardee Prof. K.L. Sebastian, Bhatnagar Awardee Prof. E.D. Jemis, Prof. Del Marshal, USA, Rajaramanna fellow A. Banerji, Palliyara Sreedharan, Prof. C.P. Aravindakshan and Prof. Rudrawariar were the resource persons in the science camp.  The camp was a residential programme for five days.  Each day started with Yoga class of Sr. Infant Tressa.  The camp was organized by the college in Association with Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. Dr. S. Sankararaman was the coordinator of the programme.

 10. Mass Education Programme

The department has also took initiative in the mass education programme in association with Victer Channel of Government of Kerala.  The academic lectures delivered in the INSPIRE programme were recorded and edited with the help of faculties of the department.  The Victer Channel is telecasting the classes on every Friday 7 pm and Monday 10.30 am. Dr. S. Sankararaman is coordinating the programme.

 11.Seminar on 3G Mobile Communications

The department of physics conducted a seminar on 3G Mobile Communications to the B.Sc Physics and Electronic students, which was held on 12th January 2011 by Prof. K.M. Balakrishna, Department of studies in Physics, Mangalore University, Karnataka. He described various aspects of communication system in addition to IG, 2G, 3G and 4G mobile communications and their various features.

 12. Lab Visit

The Department of Physics conducted a Lab Visit to the Department of Physics of Cochin University of Science and Technology, Cochin as part of Open House programme for second year physics students on 14th January 2011. Three teachers of the department accompanied the students. The programme offered the demonstration of various scientific instruments, research equipments, various research labs, live experiments and research out puts. It helped the Faculty members and the students to familiarize with the emerging science researches and investigations.

 13. Computer Training Programme on MS Office

The department of physics organized a “Computer training programme” to our B.Sc students. It was designed to develop skills and working knowledge in the area of Computer Applications and Information Technology among students. Twenty hours computer training was engaged by Mr. Bobby Mathew, Department of Commerce during five consecutive Saturdays from 22.01.2011. It helped the students to learn about MS Office and Internet. Thirty three students attended the programme and the department attained 100% computer literacy. Certificates were distributed by Prof. N. Joy, Principal, Nirmala College.

14. Employability Enhancement Training Programme
The Department of Physics, Nirmala College Organized a two day Employability Enhancement Training Programme - The Smart Touch  for the Final Year B.Sc Physics and Electronics Students on 7th and 8th December 2010, in association with Race Education and Management Solutions Pvt. Ltd., Cochin. The aim of the programme was to develop Skills in Interview, Group Discussion, C.V. Preparation, Self introduction and Presentation. The first class which was about ‘How to introduce oneself efficiently?’ was taken by Mr. Aju Kuriakose. He stared his class introducing others rather than himself; it was noteworthy. With the aid of power point presentation, he explained the common mistakes that happen during self introduction and taught how to introduce oneself with self confidence in interviews. The group discussion that followed was quite interesting. Active participation of each student was made compulsory which made confidence in their minds. This was followed by a mock interview. Three students were selected as members of interview board. Mr. Ginto Mathew took class about the future job opportunities and scopes in business and marketing. He explained how to prepare a C.V and organized various group activities and evaluated the potential of students to behave in group. With the use of visual aids, he gave various instructions on how to behave properly in a group discussion, how to develop leadership skills and how to find a good leader in a group. The training programme was beneficial and inspiring to all students.

15. Scientia 2011

The science associations (Physics, Chemistry and Biology) of Nirmala College Muvattupuzha, conducted a science fest, “Scientia-2011” on 27th and 28th of January 2011.The fest was inaugurated by Prof. Benny Cheryian, Dept. of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, MA College of Engineering, Kothamangalam. After the inaugural ceremony, a science quiz competition was conducted. Four teams participated. A seminar presentation competition on ‘Climate change’ was also organized. Six teams participated. Thereafter the cultural events were held.

On the second day, a seminar on “Nanotechnology” was conducted. The seminar was led by Dr. Rani Joseph, Director of J.J Morphy Research Centre (RubberPark). After the lunch break, Elocution competition on ‘Bioethics’ and ‘Poster designing’ competition were held. Thereafter an essay writing competition was conducted. After that the prize were distributed. Physics association actively participated in the science fest.
