About Botany

 Overview

              Being one of the oldest departments to be established right from the inception of the Institution, it strives to promote all round development of students by inculcating a spirit of inquest, discipline and adventure through various academic and co curricular activities like “Earn while you learn” scheme programmes such as certificate courses in

(1) Mushroom cultivation,

(2) Herbal drugs,

(3)Flower arrangement, bonsai making and horticultural practices.

                  The department also runs training programmes in mushroom cultivation for Local women, farmers, and students. Students of botany are constantly inspired and intellectually stimulated by projects, seminars and workshops conducted by eminent scientist who are involved in the expansion of the boundaries of knowledge. At present the faculty members are carrying out active research by way of publishing papers, doing minor research projects, participating and presenting papers in regional, national and international seminars and workshops. The Botany Department is associated with a Modern Laboratory with the latest equipments needed for practicals and also to perform minor research projects.

Goals and Objectives


            The department seeks to offer its students holistic development and academic excellence to contribute effectively to the research and development of the subject. To equip young men and women for self employment, to develop an aptitude towards science and nature, and to become more responsible and aware of their commitment to society

Highlights

1.  In 2010-11 our students obtained 100% result.
2.  The department has been consistently getting a 100% result in the University
     practical examinations.
3. The department is giving consultancy service in mushroom cultivation for the 
     INFAM, SHG Members and farmers and alsoin systematic identification of medicinal plants 
     for Nirmala college of pharmacy and  Kotancheril Pharmaceuticals.

  Botanical Garden

The faculty is adorned further by providing a well
maintained botanical garden with rare species and extinct plants such as Equisetum, Psilotum, Marsilia, Cycas circinalis, Wild Orchides etc. The green house with numerous shade loving plants is another fascinating phenomenon of the department. Its splendour is enhanced with our herbal garden with a number of luxuriant medicinal plants.

 

 

   Mushroom House

The department is further enriched with a well established mushroom house in the botanical garden. It offers ample materials for the students to do their projects, by using this unit. Moreover, it is profusely useful for the department to do workshop and consultancy service in mushroom cultivation.

 Teaching innovations

Remedial classes are arranged for slow learners, and advanced learners are given special guidance for excellence. Tutorial system, Peer teaching, Field study , Study Tour, Group Discussions, Student seminars, Continuous evaluation for the practical and lab performances, Preparation of study materials by students (Maps, charts etc) and project works, Net based assignments,  ICT enabled learning, Experimental learning, Academic and psychological counseling and Department provides financial support to the needy students .These are some of the innovations practiced in the Department. In addition, a post admission test is conducted for the first year degree students to identify their standards.

The deparment possesses a book bank facility apart from the central library. CDs on Genetics, Cell Biology, and other fields of botany are available here.
